Case Study| Pioneering in the Industry: Redtea Mobile &Wiwide, How eSIM technology is revolutionizing the Cloud-managed WiFi Solutions for Retailers

Overview:

Consumers’ embrace of digital technology is disrupting retailers worldwide, with the rapid development and prevailing application of technology like IoT, cloud computing, big data and artificial Intelligence, online and offline sales of retailers compete and blend with each other and we’ve seen a rapid growth of digital transform in more and more retailers , this is what “New Retail” is like. And for brick-and-mortar stores, the first key to embrace the opportunity of technology is the Wifi networking solution revolution.

Traditional fixed networking( Most commonly applied solution)

(essential requirement: to monitor and maintain various devices with one device only)

Till recent years many companies were using traditional network architectures, with obvious limitations like the high management cost, inconvenient installment and lack of networking resources. And day by day, with the rapid growth of offline stores, these limitations are increasing very fast.

  1. High Management Cost: less flexibility for long term contracted networking solution, with charges varying from areas , packages and shopping malls, the once-for-all charge and installment is far from reality and thus results in high management cost.
  2. Scarcity of networking resources:  installment of networking might be difficult for a new store deployed as chances are there is always the situation like lacking networking resources from local property or operators.
  3. Inconvenient control and management:  control and management can only be operated locally, which can’t adapt to the rapid growth of new stores in different areas with constantly changing business ,  Whenever a new network device is added to the network, rewiring is required. All of these devices are managed by human. And with growth of the networks, It is quite a challenge for the longtime and real-time management of the these huge wifi network infrastructures, we wish to manage all the devices through one device only and control by a single view through the platform.
  4. Lack of interaction with customers: traditional networking doesn’t allow data communication that would greatly facilitate the digital transform for retailers as the cloud broadband captures real-time status information, without a smooth shopping experience offering  wifi to snuggle an afternoon, the overall customer satisfaction would be discounted to a large extent. Not to mention to deliver customized marketing messages and promotions.

Imagine this:   there is a one-stop solution  to combine all the elements required for networking into a standard package service into the router, and device connectivity service powered by eSIM technology is then provided to enable the end-to-end networking solution, we call it RedteaReady cloud-managed Wifi solution,  here are four three benefits the Redtea eSIM technology is poised to revolutionize the retail industry.

With a single device for chain stores, networking devices of all the chain stores could be monitored through the platform that allows control and management of the networking service package and the realtime networking situation, and even automatic rewiring when a new device is added and the over-the-air upgrading could be realized.

Flexible options of operators to guarantee the “always on connectivity” according to local networking situation, by automatically switching into the preferred network resources available.

Periodic and flexible payment method, installment and maintainance is no longer a hassle work.

  • lower cost: A reduction of 40% broadband cost
  • Unified deployment of new Wi-Fi enabled locations and bring all of your devices and sites together into a single view from the platform, a sharp reduction of management cost.
  • branded guest login portals to engage customers
  • Precise marketing services: to deliver customized marketing messages and promotions. Update these messages as often as you like.

RedteaReady  in place to enable your massive IoT deployment scalability

RedteaReady Service, provided by Redtea Mobile which advocates the idea of CaaS(connectivity as a service) can solve the problem of the initial network connection in a practical way. Specifically, RedteaReady Service bundles eSIM capability together with a set of SIM profiles built-in, in order to provide connectivity as a service. We have implemented the service on Android, Linux, and one of the RTOS operating systems running with Qualcomm or MediaTek baseband processors, and we expect no major effort to port it to more other platforms and delivers global IoT Connectivity. The service uses a fixed set of the built-in SIM profiles without the need for personalization; therefore it is just a matter of integrating the service into the firmware for different module vendors and requires no modification in their manufacturing process, which makes it also possible to upgrade existing devices in the market over the air.

For the client which can be either the device OS or a 3rd-party application, RedteaReady Service provides an API to simply establish a guaranteed cellular network connection, with the amount of time to use and available data volume being the configurable parameters. The actual SIM profile used for the established connection will be chosen from the best available operators according to the current location, but the client doesn’t need to be concerned as it all happens automatically.

RedteaReady enables instant data connection from a device’s initial use, providing mobile subscription management throughout the device’s life cycle.

All in all, RedteaReady cloud-managed wifi would free device OEMs from all the common hassle work like purchasing modules or SIM cards, managing data usage and handling complicated deployment and management of networking solution.

Application Scenarios for RedteaReady cloud-managed wifi solution

By far, RedteaReady cloud-managed wifi solution has been the only wifi networking solution ,the revolutionary move of applying eSIM for the connectivity , to enable the highly efficient and flexible networking management for retail stores and to increase the interaction between brands and customers, can be counted as the initial leap in new retail networking  area covering a variety range of business like supermarkets, KTV, drugstores, cafeterias, hotels, wedding photography studios, chain stores or brand stores of clothing, luggage , bags , make-ups, jewelries etc.

5G is here, ushering in the massive IoT era!

All in All, let’s google about these familiar terms “ 5G, eSIM, and IoT, how are they related exactly ? Here is FYI:

5G and 4G

5G, not just 1G more than 4G, is the newest mobile network that’s replacing the current 4G technology by providing a number of improvements in speed, coverage, and reliability.

The primary focus and reason for needing an upgraded network is to support the growing number of devices that demand internet access, many of them requiring so much bandwidth in order to function normally that 4G simply doesn’t cut it anymore.

To sum it up, a lot faster, much lower latency and much wider geographic coverage! For better understanding, 5G is 20 times faster than 4G! This means that during the time it took to download just one piece of data with 4G (like a movie), the same could have been downloaded 20 times over a 5G network. Looking at it another way: you could download close to 10 movies before 4G could deliver even the first half of one!

5G and IoT:

The key features in 5G will exactly benefit the IoT and across major IoT industry verticals, take a scenario in car networking as an example, in 4G era, the speed of networking can’t support the smooth transfer or interaction of data , such as data for the road situation,  and delay occurs all the time, while 5G means ultra-low latency , with the fast interaction of data through sensors on the car,  unmanned driving might be a reality in the near future in 5G era.

IoT and eSIM:

IoT is set to take connectivity to the next level from billions of connectivity by “one person one SIM card” to 10 billions of devices connectivity . It will no longer just be smartphones, PCs, laptops and tablets competing for bandwidth, Electrical devices of every type are liable to join in the next phase of internet evolution. eSIM has become a focus and would be a key factor behind IoT by enabling remote globally-backed SIM provisioning, taking less space of the device, allowing customers to switch operators for travelling on-the-go and upgrade the device to be a enhanced mobile-connected with much more interaction of data.

To sum it up, with 5G to become the catalyst for innovation in IoT, eSIM emerges as the kickstart technology innovation behind IoT

China Unicom to roll out 5G on mass scale with an investment of 21 billion

On December 6th, China’s Three Major Telecom Operators Confirmed 5G frequency spectrum

On December 14th, China Unicom had its“ 2018 Network Technology Conference(hereby mentioned as the Conference in the below) ”and launched its 5G plan on mass scale devices: with investment of 21 billion in total in the first trail stage and the second fast development stage, including 10 billion investment as the benefits of its pioneering testers, 10 billion in supporting the finance of partners in 5G ecosystem and 1 billion as subsidy of adopting China Unicom 5G platform.

During the conference, China Unicom 5G plan and its progress in networking establishment has been released with its progress, piloting 5G in 17 cities to set up trials and examples. In the meantime, the “5G Industrial Terminal United Innovation Lab” was unveiled , with a mission for the incubation and integration of innovative applications and products, to strength the core competitiveness of the China Unicom 5G ecosystem. 5G to become the catalyst for innovation in IoT

In this hyper-connected world in the coming years, instead of connecting by a physical sim card, eSIM is a new way to connect in the near future for its multiple benefits mentioned above.Together with the chances provided by massive-scale connectivity comes the challenges , connectivity of mass scale and expansion might be fragmentary and not able to commercialize on large scale. Challenges are as follows:

The Innovation and Application In Consumer Electronics with SM-DP+

As one of the piloting members of the “China Unicom eSIM Industrial Cooperation Alliance”, Redtea Mobile was invited to attend the Conference , Doctor Jin-the CEO of Redtea Mobile delivered a speech to share his opinions about “ The Innovation and Application In Consumer Electronics with SM-DP+ ”

Key notes! Some Predicting Verdicts about the IoT Application:
① . Connectivity Service in IoT going mainstream to enable cloud, tube & end strategy for Integrated system service
② . Broad market space for Private network connection based on application
③ . Various needs for verticals of IoT application
④ . Massive opportunities to serve SMEs for the core competitiveness of its products
⑤ . Huge application scenarios for edge of computing

(Redtea Mobile CEO—Doctor Jin delivered a speech on the 2018 Network Technology Conference by China Unicom)

CaaS(Connectivity as a Service)the innovative cloud computing in IoT era

Different from the operation of consumer electronics, for Massive IoT M2M senario, unmanned operation is usually the case without interface for interaction.

To cope with the excessively frequent operation across regional and international mobile networking operators requested by various devices and applications, Doctor Jin brought up the idea of “ Last-mile solution for device connectivity” to bridge network operators and device OEMs. And the huge market space for IoT application calls for various verticals,  to meet the various needs ,  to integrate the industrial chain and to offer the “unified port” for seamless connectivity. Especially for device OEMs of small and medium devices without the capability to build up the platform , which has always been the focus that displayed the core strength of Redtea Mobile, to give devices the new cost-saving and practical answer of the last mile solution for an “Always-Connected” world.

To enable cloud, tube & end strategy for Integrated system service, Connectivity would be a key factor in IoT and eSIM connectivity is going mainstream . In parallel with the current cloud service structure of “Iaas, Pass, Saas”, Redtea Mobile brought up the idea of “CaaS (Connectivity as a Service)” as a pioneer in eSIM IoT era.  Basically, the service is like utility service including connectivity technology and solutions for device OEMs, chipset and module manufacturers by offering open APIs,boasting the core competitiveness of  “Plug & Play Connectivity” and “Always-on Connectivity”

RedteaReady:  Ultra Solutions for Massive IoT M2M

To deliver the spirit of CaaS, “RedteaReady” is launched by Redtea Mobile to enable massive IoT deployment scalability with eSIM technology, which has packed all the stuff related to cellular connectivity , including network traffic, remote SIM provisioning, terminal system integration , cellular connectivity management platform, and integrated them into the standard service , in collaboration with China Unicom SM-DP+ to enable scalable connectivity distribution for a large variety of M2M IoT applications.

China Unicom has been striving for the pioneering new-type standard and innovative technology, together with China Unicom SM-DP+, Redtea Mobile has set up a good example in providing seamless cellular connectivity service embedded in IoT modules, which enables network operators to gain a larger market space of traffic distribution as they are now hassle-free from the constant integration discussion with module vendors . As for the benefit devices OEMs, the streamlined and highly integrated solution keep them from being bored with purchasing SIM cards, modules, and managing cellular data separately. Redtea Mobile is committed to offer global integrated eSIM connectivity for a multi-win.

CaaS Successful Case: private cellular connectivity based on application-a new way of networking for chain stores

Currently, chain stores connect the network through traditional fixed network plan, with a series existing problems like the high management cost, inconvenient of installment, and deficiency of network route resourcesEspecially when there is quick business development with dramatic increase of retail chain stores, the problems mentioned above become really obvious for the networking establishment, maintainence, and the overall management on retail chain stores

“Cloud Broadband” that integrated with Wiwide wifi hardware capability and eSIM technology by RedteaReady, is introduced in such case, in joint effort with the leading provider of Wi-Fi network architecture WiWide, Redtea Mobile is engaged in offering the Cloud Broadband with featuring the following benefit: a reduction of 40% cost of network resources, plug&play connectivity, always-on connectivity , flexible options of networking operators.

In addition, the head quarter could have the overall management across all the devices and network resources simply by a request on the platform, which would bring a huge reduction of management cost. Applying the eSIM technology in the networking solution for new retail is the initiative in the industry .
